Suigintou (水銀燈 Suigintō, Mercury Lampe / Mercury Lamp) is the first of the Rozen Maiden dolls. She initially appears as an antagonist but becomes a major leading role further into the series.

Appearance[]

She is portrayed with silver-white hair and red eyes, the latter of which are purposefully shown to have narrow, slit pupils. She wears a black headband with black lace trimming. Each side of the headband ends with two black bows; the headband also sports a black rosette on top. A black neck ribbon is tied around her neck, and her dress is white and black. It has a matching rosette on the chest just like the one on the headband. The top part of the dress also has black lace trimming and features white ruffles trimming. The sleeves of the dress are puffy on each of the shoulders, while on the arms they fit the first half - the lower arms feature three-layered white ruffles. A ribbon and several strips of cloth from the dress hang off around her elbows. The skirt is white with ruffled trimming, layered with black diamond-shaped pieces. The two front layers feature white inverted crosses. Between these two layers is a crisscrossed ribbon. She also wears a pair of black boots with matching rosettes like those on the headband. Her back is cracked from her black feather wings pushing through.

In her earliest canonical appearances, she wears only an underdress. Her usual dress and related accessories were likely created at a later point. She also lacks her wings, her back beginning to crack in one appearance.[4]

Personality[]

Suigintou's characteristics throughout the series appear to be sadistic, spiteful, and arrogant, while desire to win the Alice Game is the strongest of all the dolls, and is primarily driven by her wish to gain the attention of their father, the fantastic dollmaker Rozen. Suigintou has no inhibitions when it comes to the Alice Game. She will use any method available to her, regardless of how brutal it may be, to reach victory. Although she avoids socializing with her sister dolls, she has a particularly bitter hatred for Shinku. However, upon meeting Megu, her master, Suigintou's attitude and motivations begin to shift; she begins to feel a strong affection for someone other than Rozen, and a will to fight for something other than becoming "Alice", the perfect girl. Suigintou's desire to protect Megu begins to even overpower her wish to meet father. She hopes to use the collected Rosa Mystica, not to become Alice, but in hopes it could heal Megu's heart ailment instead.

History[]

Creation[]

Suigintou is first completed doll created by Rozen. She spent her earliest days in an area of the N-Field filled with the smashed remains of dolls Rozen did not complete. Suigintou considered the pile her sister and gave her a name, Ginka.[4] [5]

Life in the Miniature Garden[]

At some point, Rozen stopped visiting her and she ended up in the Miniature Garden. She also seems to have spent a lot of time with Kanaria here and developed and aloof personality. She also spends time with Shinku, taking an interest in talking to her every so often. At some point, she observes to Shinku that their father hasn't paid Shinku attention lately. Suigintou also reveals that she broke a promise they made to Rozen, to never look into Rozen's workshop, and informs her that she saw him making a new sister. She watches in delight as Shinku becomes emotionally distressed over the observation.[6]

After Hinaichigo's creation, she remarks to Kanaria that she was hoping that Shinku would suffer, but instead she and Hinaichigo are getting along. Kanaria drags her along to meet up with Shinku and Hinaichigo and eventually she ends up meeting with the rest of the dolls periodically for a tea party because of her. Sometime later, she receives the Artificial Spirit, Meimei, from Rozen. Eventually she notices that Rozen has stopped visiting them again, delighting in sharing this with Shinku who becomes distressed again. Much later, she tells the rest of the dolls at their tea party that at this point they've gone mad with boredom. The rest of the dolls discuss the possiblity of the seventh doll being created.

When Souseiseki tells her to stop talking, she instead loudly exclaims that they've all become "junk" like the garden they live in. Laplace's Demon arrives and informs them that Rozen has given them a new purpose, the Alice Game. Suigintou is the first to join, as she wants nothing more than to escape the garden and become the supreme girl.[7] [8]

Relationships[]

Megu Kakizaki[]

She is Suigintou's master, but has a complicated relationship with her. Megu considers her as the dark angel who has come to take her life away. Suigintou often calls her a sick and insane master, who is suited for her. She is also the first person Suigintou has ever cared about besides Rozen. Suigintou often worries about Megu's health. She cares about her to the point that she promises that they will die together.

Shinku[]

Suigintou and Shinku are not close, but are shown to be more as rivals rather than as enemies, (There is a situation where the two are forced to cooperate together to defeat Kirakishou, and whilst they have arguments and generally bicker comically amongst themselves, they are not mortal enemies.)

Rozen[]

Quotes[]

Weapons and Skills[]

She is able to spawn a large amount of feathers from her back and make them move at incredible speeds. Suigintou can also create destructive blue flames and use them on her own feathers. Suigintou's varied abilities, particularly when combined with her savagely cunning nature, make her one of the strongest players in the Alice Game.

Suigintou is also shown to use her feathers defensively by using her wings to defend herself from physical attacks.

Trivia[]

  • Her artificial spirit, "Meimei," is named after the Japanese word "Mei", meaning darkness.
  • The official German translation of her name is incorrect, as "mercury" is not the German word for mercury. The correct translation of her name would be "Quecksilber Lampe".
